As a former fat woman, I see firsthand the difference in treatment I've received since losing weight ten years ago. Stigma and bias about obesity is often construed as a choice, and the beliefs that overweight people are somehow less intelligent and less valuable continue to have a stronghold. As a large woman, I felt judged on everything from what I ate to the car I drove, and was vulnerable to both subtle and overt forms of discrimination everywhere I went. How was I to teach my children to value their strengths and assets in a society that prized external perfectionism?
If this is you, join me in raising awareness about weight stigma by sharing your experiences as an overweight woman in a society that continues to equate thinness with success. Together we'll explore the stigma we've encountered, how it impacted our self-worth, and what we wish society understood about life as an obese woman in Grief Diaries: Life of a Fat Chick.
